A man has admitted the horrific double killing of a young couple as they left work together after a night shift at Matalan. Hotel worker Andrew Saunders, 20, brutally attacked Zoe Morgan, 21, and Lee Simmons, 33, as they headed home from the fashion store. The pair had been dating for less than four months after striking up a romance at the flagship Cardiff shop, where Zoe was a window dresser and Lee was a sales assistant. Saunders was arrested shortly after the 5.30am killing at his family’s £1 million home. He arrived at Cardiff Crown Court this morning and took just two minutes to plead guilty to the double murder.
The killer will be sentenced next year. There were around 20 people in the public gallery for the brief court hearing. In a statement, Zoe’s family said after the tragedy: “She had a heart of gold and would do anything for anybody. “She was taken away from us tragically too soon and has left a massive hole in our lives that will never be filled. “Zoe will always be in our hearts forever and always. We are all broken-hearted.”
Saunders – whom police said was known to Zoe and Lee – was arrested at his home within 25 minutes of the couple’s bodies being found. He is reported to have worked at hotel in Cardiff. Zoe and Lee had fallen for each other while working at the store near the popular St David’s Shopping Centre.
Friends said devoted Lee called his girlfriend ‘my Tinkerbell’. Lee heroically tried to save his partner as she was attacked outside the store in Queen Street – Matalan’s first high street branch in the UK. One local wrote on Facebook: “It was a young girl on her way to work, the gentleman involved was trying to help her, so sad, how any1 can be so cruel.” A colleague said: “This is a terrible tragedy. They had only started seeing each other and made a lovely couple.
“We are all in bits and no-one could face opening the store today.”
